Cast and Curious: “Participatory” in Sello Pesa and Vaughn Sadie’s Inhabitant at iDANS 05

“Participatory” became the new catch qualification for most of today’s artistic productions. Be it a contemporary art piece or a performance, the audience –or the public is imagined and situated more and more as the co-maker of the work. Though the ultimate credits of authorship remain with the artists, the work is actualized with the active involvement of those who would conventionally come ‘to watch’ the piece. In such instances, hospitable acts are exchanged at varying degrees between the artist and participants, exposing both parties to different levels of risk and work.

Organized and presented by Bimeras Cultural Foundation, this year’s iDANS 05 festival[1], consistent with their curatorial theme “At Work” provided a condensed space of inquiry for the audiences’ acts of engagement and production through a number of valuable performances. Jerome Bel ile Popüler Müzik Eşliğinde Rakı Sofrası…

Jerome Bel’in çağdaş koreografi sahnesinde önemli bir yer kazanan eseri The Show Must Go On (Şov Devam Etmeli), yerli bir kadro ile İstanbul’da iki gün boyunca seyiriciyle buluştu. Bu buluşma –önceden deneyimlediklerimizden farklı olarak- seyirciyi seyircilikten, performansçıyı bakışın nesnesi olmaktan çıkaran gerçek bir buluşmaydı.  Jerome Bel’in dediği gibi, performansa açılan “delikler” [1] sayesinde izleyiciye oturduğu koltuğu dar getiren, bilindik edilgen/sessiz seyirci algısını alt-üst eden farklı bir iş deneyimliyoruz. 2011 Kritik Çaba Türkiye Ödülü Jüri Bildirisi

Bimeras’ın organize ettiği 5. İDANS Uluslararası Çağdaş Dans ve Performans Festivali çerçevesinde düzenlenen “Kritik Çaba” oturumları sonucunda 2011 Kritik Çaba Türkiye Ödülü Sello Pesa ve Vaughn Sadie’nin Inhabitant adlı kamusal alan performansına verilmiştir. Inhabitant, çağdaş performans sanatının gösteri alanlarının sınırlarını zorlama, dönüştürme  iddiasını hayata geçirmeyi başarmış; plansız şehirleşmenin terörize ettiği bir kamusallığın ortasına performans sanatçıları olarak kendilerini, izleyiciyi ve Dolapdere sakinlerini birbirinin eşiti aktörler olarak yerleştirmiştir. Pek çok kamusal alan performansı ya da enstalasyonunda gözlendiği üzere, şehrin ve/veya mekanın verili anlamlar dizgesini izleyicinin ‘okumasına’ terk etme kolaycılığına kaçmamış, her bir ‘öteki’yi diğerine yaklaştırmayı başaran detaylı komposizyonuyla hepimizin hayatını şu ya da bu biçimde etkileyen ortak, yerel ve evrensel bir soruna; metropollerin kimler için, nasıl ve hangi politikalarla inşa edildiği meselesine bakmamızı sağlamıştır. Pesa ve Sadie bize hem ‘şehrin sakinleri kimdir?’ diye sormuş, hem de Güney Afrika’dan İstanbul’a gelip iki hafta gibi kısa bir sürede, son derece başarılı bir ekip çalışmasıyla şehrin merkezindeki o ‘tehlikeli kenar mahallenin’ alçakgönüllü birer ‘sakini’ olmayı başarmışlardır.

Sello Pesa, Vaughn Sadie – Inhabitant

Güney Afrikalı koreograf ve dansçı Sello Pesa ve aynı zamanda güncel sanatçı olan ışık tasarımcısı Vaughn Sadie’nin  Johannesburg kentinden yola çıkarak gerçekleştirdikleri Inhabitant adlı projeleri Bimeras tarafından bu yıl 5.si düzenlenen iDANS Festivali’nin en önemli projesi oldu. Kritik Çaba adı altında bir araya gelen ve festival süresince gerçekleşen tüm performansları izleyerek değerlendiren eleştirmenlerden de tam not alarak 2011 Türkiye Ödülü’ne layık görüldü. Read more

Sello Pesa & Vaughn Sadie – Inhabitant

Inhabitant by Sello Pesa and Vaughn Sadie is a moving example of how hospitality can be a political act through the means of performative framing. The artists use the space of Dolapdere and its inhabitants as the object of their aesthetic-bodily and social research. The space, during the performance, becomes the site of a confused and shared guilt of spectatorship while at the same time involving everyone in the act of care for each other: the drivers who might get distracted, the performers rolling in the middle of the street, the kids who might take the performers as examples for courageous yet fatale acts all become concerns one feels the need “to do something about”. One does not know what to watch, how/when/or whether to intervene. Where the daily scenery of Dolapdere mixes with the framed-performed acts, the audience deals with his/her own dilemmas of spectatorship, both in real life and as a performance audience. Inhabitant is a strong piece operating in the blue space that affect-aesthetics-political engagement and curiosity occupy, not on separate chairs, yet as a single entity.

Son yıllarda kent ölçeğinde yaşam alanlarının neoliberal politikalar çerçevesinde müdahale ve şekillendirmeye maruz kalması Türkiye’de de başlı başına inceleme konusu haline geldi. İstanbul’un dört bir yanında hala sürmekte olan mutenalaştırma çalışmaları, 90’lı yılların geri dönen kabusu müteahhit salgını, tecrit topluluklarının şehrin tüm boşluklarını doldurması gibi meselelerin yanı sıra, şehrin sakinlerinin homojenleştirilmesi ve ortalamaya dahil olmayanların çevreye tasfiye edilmesi uzak tahayyüller olmaktan çıkıp gündelik hayatta  etkilerini hep beraber yaşadığımız yakıcı sorunlar halini aldı. Bunlara karşı tepki gösterme reflekslerimizi yeni yeni geliştirirken, dışardan bir bakışın kanıksadığımız ironiyi ayan beyan edip “espriyi kaçırması” iyi geldi: Güney Afrikalı sanatçılar Sello Pesa ve Vaughn Sadie, Johannesburg’da göçmen gruplarının mesken tutma mücadelelerine ışık tuttukları ortak çalışmaları Inhabitant’ın iDANS 05 kapsamında İstanbul için tasarlanmış versiyonu ile Dolapdere’deydiler. Geçtiğimiz yılki festivalde Life and Strive adlı işiyle tecrit topluluklarını inceleyen Mirko Winkel de ekibe danışman olarak eşlik etti. İstanbullu sanatçıların ve mahalleli göçmenlerin de rol aldığı performans bir muhitin nasıl sahneye dönüşebileceğinin de ilginç bir örneğiydi. Kamusal alanda altyapının ikamet edenlerle nasıl ilişkiler kurduğu üzerine çalışan görsel sanatçı Vaughn Sadie ile dansçı olmayan sanatçılarla beraber kendi dans tecrübesini sorgulayan Sello Pesa’nın yanı sıra “sahnede” Brian Mtembu ve Humphrey Maleka yer aldı. Gösteri mekanının belirlenmesinden önce, Berlinli sanatçı Mirko Winkel ve Güney Afrika’dan taze gözler ve sorular getiren ekiple söyleştik.

“Occupy [Insert your location here]“: An interview with Inhabitant artists

South African artists Sello Pesa and Vaughn Sadie performed their collaborative work Inhabitant, which focused on the habitation struggles of immigrants in the city of Johannesburg, with a new version designed for Istanbul in the frame of iDANS 05 at Dolapdere. Mirko Winkel, one of the creators of Life and Strive, performed last year centering around gated communities in Istanbul, accompanied the group as facilitator. The performance, featuring artists from Istanbul as well as immigrants from the district, was an interesting example of how a neighborhood can be transformed into a stage. Dancers Brian Mtembu and Humphrey Maleka was on “stage” along with visual artist Vaugh Sadie -who works on the relationship between infrastructures of public spaces with their residents- and Sello Pesa, examining his own dance background with artists from other disciplines. We interviewed the Berlin-based artist Winkel and the South African group.
